Smart-home security is becoming readily available to the average consumer, enabling deeper connections with their homes. At Merkury Innovations, I was tasked with researching industry leaders and their unique market offerings to propose a new design identity for the Merkury smart doorbell. The primary goal was to enhance the installation and the internal structure of the previous Merkury smart doorbell.
I proposed a new design identity that retains the quality and style expected of the Merkury smart home brand while elevating it with a more premium and refined aesthetic.
The new Merkury smart doorbell is a sleek, simplified pill shape that fits seamlessly with any home’s exterior. From welcoming visitors to checking in on a home delivery, it offers effortless communication with those who are interacting with your home.

Process
After conducting in-depth market research, I explored the overall form and architecture through a combination of rough sketches, quick Illustrator drafts, and preliminary CAD models. Moving fluidly between these methods allowed me to achieve the most effective results.
Refinement
I produced physical 3D prints to evaluate multiple design directions and assess form and scale. The construction was based on predefined dimensions and the PCB layout provided by the electrical engineering team, as well as key usability requirements, including the camera, microphone, IR sensor, and speaker.

The Aesthetic
The form language of the new smart doorbell draws inspiration from the existing Merkury pill aesthetic, while simplifying and elevating the design. Its compact construction enhances versatility, making mounting easier and more flexible.
