GALAXY PROJECTOR V.2

2021

For the Galaxy Projector V.1, starting with a definite shape and forcing the components to fit resulted in unnecessary gaps in the housing structure. After gaining more insights from V.1, I aimed to create more cohesive design while expanding its usability.

Inspired by the icosahedron, the cohesive form enhances usability and evenly distributes weight, allowing it to sit steadily on any surface.

Merkury galaxy projectors are available at retailers such as Wal-Mart and JCPenny.

Responsibilities: Industrial Design, Product Strategy

Sketches & Prototypes

Lots of sketches were developed to explore this radical form factor, with a focus on simplifying manufacturing and reducing costs. The design process emphasized optimization and refinement, ensuring features like consistent wall thickness, appropriate draft angles, textured surfaces, reinforcing ribs, and avoiding undercuts or complex features that would require side action.

Various colors were tested for the laser effect, with green being selected for its eye-friendly qualities.

I explored various darker tones that would subtly blend the product into a low-light environment without making it disappear entirely. Ultimately, a matte black finish was chosen.

Testing & Refinement

Printed screenshots of the concept development provided a quick reference for detailed modifications. I tested the PP sample for a week, evaluating its tolerance and refining the feeling it brings to the room.
