What if you could bring a magical experience of a starry night sky into your room?
GALAXY PROJECTOR V.1
2020
The pandemic forced people to stay confined to their homes and to reevaluate their living space. At Merkury Innovations, I was fully in charge of designing a family of two galaxy projectors. The goal was to establish a clear design language that would translate across both versions while standing out on an oversaturated market shelf.
The Sky Light Projector with Laser allows users to effortlessly control LED colors, rotation speed, green laser light, and light modes - either with or without the remote. Activate sound sync mode for a magical light show that syncs with your music.
West & Arrow galaxy projector is available at retailers such as Target.
Responsibilities: Industrial Design, Product Strategy
Trendy & Intuitive
My initial concept was to create a galaxy projector that seamlessly integrates with modern interiors. Early iterations centered around vertical-axis projections, but as the design evolved, it became clear that a multi-faceted form would better support projections across multiple axes, enhancing the overall user experience.
• The micro-USB port was initially integrated into the cosmetic design, but its durability diminished with frequent use. To improve longevity, a DC power cord was introduced for enhanced resilience. The inner PCB was carefully selected in white to optimize the reflection of internal lighting, ensuring color accuracy without distortion.
• The bottom portion of the housing was extended to ensure the projector remains stable, even when positioned at an angle on various surfaces.
• The manufacturer encountered an issue where the lighter-colored housing allows light to bleed through. To achieve controlled lighting effects, a darker housing color was required.
• I aimed to introduce a subtle touch of cool color that would complement both cool-toned and neutral environments. After discussing with the sales team, a black housing color was selected to appeal to a broader demographic.
